I have three voltages: 12V AC 220V AC (earthed) AC transformer I want to take 220V and add it to 12V. What I did: I set the breaker to 15A. Then I connected the transformer output wire to the ground line of the 12V. I connected the ground line to the ground line of the 220V. This resulted in 12V at the transformer input. I thought this will do the job. The problem is that the transformer turns the 12V down to about 7V. Is this normal? I want to connect it correctly. I know I could use a variable transformer to get 220V at the output. But I want to understand why this doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? A: AC transformers are designed to take 220V AC and produce a different AC voltage depending on the impedance of the load. There are two ways this is done, which are distinguished by the terminology applied to the transformer: "linear" transformers — when used as an AC/DC transformer, they are often called "linear," although this is an incorrect terminology. An "infinite impedance" load is equivalent to a short circuit and will force the primary coil to shut down. The secondary coil will convert the remaining voltage to AC of a different frequency than the input. "cycloconverters" or "rectifiers" — when used as an AC/DC transformer, they are often called "cycloconverters" or "rectifiers." A "resistive" load will force the primary coil to shut down and the secondary coil will convert the remaining voltage to a different frequency, as before. A "low impedance" load (a short circuit) will do the same. You have what is called a "cycloconverter" load. If you want to make a "linear" load, then you should use a variable transformer. With the right ratio, you can make the ratio of the two sides very close to 1, so you have to have some means of supplying 12V to the secondary winding.
